Film Analysis

Pick an artist from the movie Beautiful Losers or Exit Through the Gift Shop to use as a character to analyze. In this post take a close look at her/his perception of art production, while discussing your own ideas about why you make the art you make.
You could also choose to analyze one particular segment, quote, or idea from the movie applying it to your own life.
Your post should be at least three paragraphs in length. It should deal with only one artist’s perspective, as well as your own.  The goal of this post it to remain focused on one theme and segment from the movie, while going in-depth into its meaning.

Questions to ask yourself while choosing an artists and a moment that stands out in the movie to write about:

  • ·       How does her/his and your culture, provoke the creation of art?
  • ·        Does the artist/you feel like an insider or an outsider within a culture? Does this feeling lead to the creation of art?
  • ·        How does collaboration, mimicking, and/or inspiration by other artists lead to the creation of art? Is this a good/bad thing, why?
  • ·        How does the phenomenon of success change or strengthen one’s perception of art creation? Does the artist create for her/himself alone?
  • ·        How does your own ideas about creativity manifest on a personal, local, or global level? How do you want it to impact your community?

  1. I picked the artist Thierry. I believe I can relate to his work the most because we both

like to tell stories through what we make. Although Thierry likes to show off other

people’s stories, towards the end he starts to tell his. Which is what I do. I always find

a way to tell my story through every piece I make. The video Thierry made was crazy

ridiculous. I personally believe he used drugs when editing the film. I will never and

have never used drugs or alcohol to improve my work.

Thierry comes from a culture of film he started at a very young age due to issues

involving his mother. My work speaks of my mother and my past struggles. I guess

you could say or creations were provoked through people that treated us badly. To me

all artists are outsiders till they find their group. Thierry found his through following

artists while I found mine through speaking out through art.

Towards the end in order for Thierry not to lose out on his drug related film. I think

he tired to mimic art the art of Banksey. He didn’t copy the work though. He simply

took an idea made it his own and that got his mind exploring. In the end Thierry and me

believe we are just trying to create work for others. While Thierry shows off his crazy

mind and stories of others, I’m just trying to help people out in the world of pain. Hey?

Maybe someone really enjoyed their acid trip on Thierry’s film and maybe just maybe I

helped a lost soul figure out why art can get them through anything.

  2. Margaret Kilgallen’s art really stayed in my memory because she often drew the same thing or subject many times. I feel her art was easy to understand and there might have been a twist but I really loved it. The woman she always draw have different emotions drawn into their mouths. I think that is why I remember it her so well. I feel when there is emotion involved people tend to remember it. I feel that There is no riddle about what her images are. You can clearly see the woman, or the leaf. Kilgallen’s images are Mainly spired by folk art. They are not extremely beautiful, and also not very complicated.

People always do artwork that so complicated to understand Margaret always put an emotion that is easy to recognize. Sometimes her paintings are of a woman looking so plain, without much emotion, which is very likable because it’s the way we live life a lot of the time. Emotion is something every one feels so I really connected with her art.

I can make a connection with Kilgallen’s artwork because she was interested in imperfection and hand made things. I loved how she said she liked to see “the hand” in someone’s work. I feel that when someone works so hard to make something perfect, it can really take the beauty out of the piece. In my own life and studies right now, I also appreciate imperfection. Teachers must appreciate imperfection and know how to let a child be their own artist and be themselves.

  3. After watching the movie: Exit Through the Gift Shop, I did not feel any connection to these artists because they are more focused on graffiti and street art. Their personalities do not fit me, because they are punks and very rebellious. The artists from the documentary did not care about the laws, vandalized the business owners’ property, and put their art on buildings without asking permissions. I understand they are trying to show us how hey create the arts by how they grew up in their own cultures.
I still do not understand why these artists invade the private property and grafting or gluing their artworks on building walls. The building owners paid so much money to build the architectural models and want to keep their businesses looking nice trying to accommodate people entering the bakeries, restaurants, and shops. Also, the neighborhoods are trying so hard to keep their environments very neat. I still do appreciate their creativity, skills, and artworks but I keep asking myself, why they can’t just do at home? Why can’t they start their own gallery/business to show their artworks instead invading private property? This makes people feel uncomfortable and assume the graffiti work is from the gangs.
Honestly, I used to be an artist but I’m not kind of this person who is very rebellious and does not have care for things. I’m very respectful and loyalty person. I think the people from the movie did use drugs to create their work or edited it to make the documentary look trippy. I never use any drugs and I am completely against drugs.

I chose Thierry because I believe he had a better view of art itself by collaborating more. He started to collaborate with artists he found interesting. He basically film what was happening when he partnered with different artists for inspiration for himself as well.
Thierry actually skipped a few steps to success by gaining ideas from different the people he was working with before. He had his own show that was a pretty fast success to me off of little ideas he took and recreated his own. I believe sometimes mimicking can have its ins and outs on some situations. Thierry seemed to have a new approach and appreciation on art than just filming people, which was good.
On the other hand mimicking can cause some problems with lacking your own originality to your art. That’s why I think you should be more cautious. Only take small details and/or parts of someone else’s piece. Also sometimes you can only get so far off others ideas because you start to notice the same Oh hey this person did this or that first he just copied! In reality Thierry only took a few ideas from the other artists to help his own expression of art come across understanding. So he made the value and construction more current and important than the original street art. Inspiration should be taken all over from around you, not just people alone.

  5. Hello Everyone! :)
The artist that I pick is Thierry Guitta. While others would say all he did was copy other peoples work, I think that it was original in its own way. He took pieces of people and added a twist to it. For example, the Elvis Presley Piece, he took the picture of him with his guitar, and he replaced the gun with a water machine gun. Although he didn't physically do that piece of art by himself, the idea came from him. So technically you can and you can't say he didn't come up with his own idea's.
I mean sure, he kind of copied the obey logo, and he even put his "obey symbol" in the same places that the obey guy did (I forgot his name),but I think he did that because he was inspired. He was inspired by Obey he was a fan of his work so I think that is what gave Thierry the inspiration that he needed to kick start his career. His exhibit was absolutely amazingly talented to me, I would have given anything to be there and witness it. The robot made out of television sets, was my favorite, it kind of had this Transformers vibe to it.
In my opinion, I believe the only reason that people were upset about him becoming so popular and famous over night was because, they helped him create his exhibit they are the ones who helped him get to the monarchy of success. They felt that he had cheated his way to the top, and I totally disagree. He wasn't afraid to take a risk, and be ballsy. He took that extra step, and it got him recognition and fame.
That is why I love Thierry he's me in a way. I'm a very out there kind of person even though I seem shy and quiet. He was under estimated in everything that he did, and I feel a real connection with him on that, because I was also constantly underestimated. In the movie he even said that " I didn't expect this event to be this successful",and when he made it, he made it big!

After watching the movie “Beautiful Losers,” the one character that jumped out to me and was most interesting was Thierry. People were arguing about if it was original artwork or that Thierry copied other artist. I’ve been told that you have to be a great listener before you’re a great leader, and I think Thierry was. He went around the world searching for the greatest street artists and Thierry found them. Not only did Thierry film everything that Banksy and the other artist did, he observed and studied their style and creativity. I believe that Thierry was truly interested and fascinated by the street art. Thierry understood why Banksy was making the art he was making. It’s a way of expressing yourself and how you feel. Thierry was inspired and taught by the best of the best (Banksy). He absorbed everything that Banksy taught him and put it to use. Everybody has a mentor or somebody they want to be like. We strive to be like that individual and that’s what Thierry did. Thierry was taught by Banksy and wanted to make beautiful art like him. You can say their style of work maybe similar in some ways but they’re both different and original. They’re both completely different ideas for different artist’s .Thierry was quite successful with his art and people loved it.
Thierry reminds me of myself in a way. Thierry was introduced to something that he was really interested in and worked with some of the most talented artist’s in this branch of work. He stood back, filmed, and studied the craft. He then took everything he learned and went to work. There was nothing distracting him. He blew up and his art was known across the country. He learned what to do and he put his own twist on it. If I task to do, I find out how to do it then put my own twist to it, to make it just a bit better like Thierry.

Analysis of Exit Through the Gift Shop

I chose Thierry for my character analysis because I have many pointers to make

about him. To be honest I can’t relate to him on a personal level, but the actions he made

towards the end of the movie got me mad. The fact that he steals Banksy’s and Shepard’s

style of street art for Thierry’s exhibit really pissed me off because he calls himself an

artist but really isn’t. Thierry stole Shepard’s ‘Obey’ sticker idea by taking a photo of

himself and sticking it in the same area Shepard’s were located. Thierry didn’t even print

out the sticker himself or even made it, he went to a shop to get it done!

As much as Shepard’s idea was stolen from Thierry I think Banksy was more

aggravated. I believe this happened because Shepherd was getting sued at that point and

Banksy style of art was being ripped off from Thierry. Towards the end of the movie

Banksy made the comment, “I used to encourage everyone to make art, I always thought

everyone should do it. I don’t really do that too much anymore”. I don’t blame him for

feeling that way because I would do the same if I were in that position. Thierry snatched

both ends of the stick and somewhat reinvented Shepard’s and Banksy style and made it

his own, but barely. He hired people to help him create his art pieces and got a lot of help

from people with Thierry’s ‘creation’ of his Life Is Beautiful exhibit. That’s not being an

artist, an artist is making and creating things on your own with no help.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when other people take my ideas and use them

without even considering my name into it. Especially huge projects for school because I

love creating ideas for them. That’s why when I’m in class I don’t share my ideas out loud

because I know for a fact anyone will steal it to get an ‘A’. When the teacher asks about

the proposal for the project that’s the only way of me sharing my idea. I know people will

stab you in the back for them to become more successful and they won’t care. I remember

my sophomore year of high school I was the only one that wore high waisted shorts.

Students would stare and give me dirty looks in the hallway when I’d wear them, but I didn’t

care at all. Once the end of junior year hit, all the girls started wearing them and I just

hated everyone. Like, hello? I started this trend! Some of my friends even told me, “weren’t

you the one who first wore them to school?” I’m not going to lie but I was very aggravated

and annoyed once all the girls started wearing them. By then, high-waisted shorts were so

over-rated by me that I stopped wearing mine. Overall, I connected with Thierry on more of

the actions he pulled with stealing others style of art because I went through the same

    ordeal.

Exit Through the Gift Shop Analysis

In the movie, Exit Through the Gift Shop there were several artists that were very appealing with their own style. The artist that interested me most with his style was the artist, Banksy. Throughout the movie, the fact that Banksy was always hidden and never showed his face was very interesting. It left me wanting to know more. Style depicts between artist to artist, and it separates them from each other. Banksy had a very edgy style that always left the audience asking questions.

“Most artists spend years perfecting their craft finding their style. Thierry seems to have missed all those bits. I mean there's no one quite like Thierry. Even if his art looks quite a lot like everyone’s else's.” (Banksy) Banksy stated this quote in the movie when he was referring to Thierry. The fact that Thierry came into the art culture quickly without perfecting his craft, frustrated Banksy especially since he helped him make the film and show him his art. In a way, I feel that Banksy thinks Thierry stole his and other artist’s styles.

Banksy has a very specific sense of art. He has perfected his craft over years and gained his reputation through experiences and figuring things out on his own. His style is gained through experiences and his style carries him a long way. Banksy is very much so in the art culture and always has been ever since he started graffiti. He has created thousands of pieces of art and has created a foundation of art culture through his pieces. I feel that Banksy is one of the best graffiti artists because he doesn’t get paid for all his art and he has found the love and passion for art as some professional artists haven’t always found. Understanding Banksy and his style helps explain him.

In this blog I used style as the main theme but looked into Bansky and where he is in the art culture and why I feel the way I do about him as my analysis.

  9. After watching the movie "Exit through the gift shop" the one artist that really caught my eye is Thierry Guitta. His work is really interesting to me. I personally don't mind if he actually made it or hired people to make it, those were still his ideas and he was still involved in the process as much as the other artists were. The fact that Thierry was in a way accused of imitating Bansky's art, I don't see it that way. Because isn't art about getting inspired and inspiring someone else's mind. I understand why some of the artists in the film were a bit upset, I mean Thierry got known in a very short amount of time and for the rest it took more time. However that is not Thierry's fault maybe he had bigger vision and better ambition and because he was so different his art was accepted by people. Manny people find Thierry relatable which is what makes it totally acceptable and relatable. Art is about getting inspired, being able to relate to someone's work and appreciate other artists art. I personally can relate to Thierry, I believe that art is more than just making the actual piece, it also has to do with the process of thinking, developing your own thoughts and telling stories or experiences through art.
